Team Fortress
These pages contain general information on Team Fortress for all those
who have not yet heard anything about this great Quake conversion.
What is TeamFortress?
Team Fortress is a conversion for Quake. It introduces different character
classes, new weapons and a "Capture-the-Flag"-style play (for most maps, that
is). Each player chooses a team, which tries to capture the enemy's flag and
take it back to its own castle. There are also maps around which have different
scoring conditions.
The player classes have different strengths and weaknesses, so engaging the
enemy head on is not always a good idea. |
Why play TeamFortress?
Because it is so much more fun than regular Quake. The objective-based scoring
system and the fact that there are different characters classes to choose from
make TeamFortress much more challenging than regular Deathmatch.
Rather than shooting everything that moves you must coordinate the efforts of
your team and learn to use your character to the best of his abilities. All this
adds strategy and depth to the gameplay, things which regular Deathmatch sorely lacks.
As an added bonus, many TF levels are optimized so that they are playable even on
slow CPUs, something that 040 owners will be glad to hear. |
Installing TeamFortress
First, unzip the "tf28.zip" into your Quake-directory. Now all files can be
found in "/quake/fortress/". Go into "/fortress/" and create a new dir named
"maps". Unzip all maps into this directory. Everybody who considers himself
at least an intermediate user should be able to deduce the necessary steps
by looking at the readme contained in the tf28.zip on our files page.
Our TF CD-ROM contains a localized install script that handles TeamFortress
installation even for inexperienced users. |
Starting TeamFortress
| Start it from shell via: quake -game fortress
Do not forget to add all other commandline options you normally use when
starting Quake. Enjoy the intro! If you want to skip it in the future (the
fading is unnerving, sometimes), choose a map on startup by adding
+map <mapname> to the commandline. |
Playing TeamFortress
After firing up the conversion, connect to your favourite TF-servers, preferably
ours ;-). After your connection has been established, you'll have to choose a
team by pressing the team's number ("1" or "2" in most cases). Now you'll have
to choose a character and after that you can start playing.
It is a good idea to learn the maps in single player so you don't end up lost
in the middle of a firefight. |
Character Classes
There are nine different classes:
1. Scout - 2. Sniper - 3. Soldier - 4. Heavy Weapon Guy - 5. Spy - 6. Engineer - 7. Pyromaniac - 8. Combat Medic - 9. Demolitions Man
Scout:
| The scout is fast and agile, though poorly armed and armored. His main purpose
is to grab the flag and run. He also is able to disarm explosive charges (detpacks)
set by a demoman and has a scanner which can be used to locate enemy and friendly
players. |
Sniper:
This guy carries a sniper rifle. If you spot a red dot searching for your body,
you better take cover. By pressing fire the sniper's weaponsight zooms in and
his laser sight goes on, the longer he aims, the deadlier the shot. He is able
to kill most players with one direct hit. But he's got weak armor.
To put it short: let him get a clean shot and you're history; get close
and keep moving, then he's history. |
Soldier:
| The soldier is the workhorse of most TF teams - he is armed with both
shotguns and a rocket launcher and is considerably well armored.
He has no special abilities but is a very good fighter. |
Heavy Weapon Guy:
| Carrying an assault-gun, this heavy armored fellow will saw in half every infidel who
crosses his line of fire. Unfortunately he cannot move and fire
at the same time and is the slowest class in the game. The HWGuy has awesome armor. |
Spy:
| The spy can change his appearance: He's able to (visually) change class and
team, backknifing his enemies. You think he's dead? Better be careful, he could
be feigning that, too. He also carries a tranquilizer gun which slows down
enemies. The scout is a very dangerous class if played by a capable individual.
Some maps have spy detectors in certain places, so you better watch out :) |
Engineer:
This guy is able to build an ammunition/armor dispenser which can supply
your team with all you need wherever it is put up. Even more useful is
the sentry gun, an automated point-defense weapon, which can be placed in
any place the engineer can reach.
Engineers are able to reapair the armor of their team mates, and there are
some maps on which engineers can activate special features or open tunnels. |
Pyromaniac:
| A total maniac. Napalm and flamethrower are his toys, he likes it hot and burning.
Pyros are very good for softening up the enemy but usually lack the punch to
finish one of the fighting classes on their own. |
Combat Medic:
Medics are equipped with the supershotgun and supernailgun as well as a bioweapon/medkit
combination. Using the medkit they can heal teammates and even give them up to
50 points of megahealth as well as cure diseases caused by other medics.
The Bioweapon acts as a regular axe but also infects enemies with a mysterious
disease which causes them to loose health until healed by a friendly medic or
until they die.
As long as they have medikit "ammunition", Medics slowly regenerate health. |
Demolitions man:
Apart from the axe and shotgun which serve as backup weapons, the Demoman is
equipped with a combined grenade/pipebomb launcher and up to one detpack.
Pipebombs are fired like normal grenades, but do not have a timed fuse. Instead,
they detonate when the demoman presses a certain key. Pipebombs can even be
made to detonate in mid-air.
Detpacks are explosive charges with a timed fuse and can be placed somewhere on
the map where they blow up in a really large explosion after the timer has
expired. Some maps have special doors or wall which can be blown open by
use of a detpack. |
